Understanding Safety Classes
In Australia, high-visibility garments are classified into three main types under AS/NZS 4602.1:2024.
What are the 3 main types of safety jackets?
- Class D: For use in daylight only. Jackets use bright fluorescent colours (yellow, orange).
- Class N: For night work. Jackets must have retroreflective tape that reflects light from headlights.
- Class D/N: Dual compliance. These jackets use both tape and fluorescent material and are suitable for all-day and night use.
Who Must Wear Hi-Vis Jackets in Australia?
In accordance with WHS Regulations, hi-vis jackets are considered PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and must be supplied by the employer (PCBU) if a risk assessment identifies hazards such as:
- Moving vehicles or equipment
- Poor lighting or outdoor work
- Inclement weather (rain, wind, cold)
- Typical Industries Requiring Hi-Vis Jackets:
- Construction & civil works
- Road traffic & transport control
- Warehousing & forklift zones
- Mining & resources
- Railways & aviation
- Emergency services (police, ambulance, fire)
Workers must wear jackets as instructed. Non-compliance may result in disciplinary action or restricted site access.
